Winters can get pretty brutal here in Minnesota, but with a few essential winterizing steps, chickens can thrive even in the harshest conditions! Here’s what I recommend for winterizing your coop: ❄️Add insulation (we’re using 1.5” styrofoam board covered with 1/8” panel board) ❄️Cover large windows with polycarbonate (it creates a wonderful greenhouse effect!) ❄️Add ventilation holes (placed as high as possible to let moisture escape) ❄️Keep the waterers OUTSIDE the coop (moisture = frostbite) ❄️Add a Chickcozy Smart Coop Heater (for when it hits -20F! I don’t recommend routinely heating the coop.) There are a lot of radiant heaters on the market and I chose Chickcozy because: 🔥It’s a safe heat source (no more heat lamps!) 🔥Easy to install and is energy efficient 🔥Has a built-in smart temperature sensor that ensures real-time adjustments as the outside temperature changes 🔥Adjustable temperature from 70 to 190 degrees 🔥Doubles as a brooder heat plate for chicks in the spring I know you’re going to want one because winter is right around the corner! Simply visit https://chickcozy.com/thehomesteadingrd and the 5% off discount will automatically apply! #sponsored #chickcozy #chickcozycoopheater #coopremodel #chickencoop #mycoop #backyardchickens | The Homesteading RD

When I was planning and designing my chicken coop and run I watched a ton of @carolinacoops YouTube videos and they recommended using wood mulch in the run. It made complete sense to me! I already fill my landscape beds with mulch and I love how easy it is to freshen it up each spring by turning or replenishing it. It looks natural, clean and is CHEAP! I treat my mulched chicken run the same as the deep litter method in that I go in and “turn” it with a rake every few days. Over time mulch will break down into rich organic matter mixing in with the earth below, which is so healthy for your chickens! “They’re not at the beach, they don’t need to live on sand!” I may clean it all out once a year and replace with new mulch or if it looks okay I’ll just replenish with a few bags over time. If you do clean it out, it would be excellent for your compost! Just be sure it’s dye free. Of course do not use cedar mulch so pay attention to what kind you’re getting. I buy mine from the hardware store or Menards but you can get it a lot cheaper (possibly free!) by the truck load if you search your area. #chickencoops #chickencoopideas #chickencoopdesign #backyardchickens #backyardflock #raisingchickens #chickenkeeping #chickenrunideas #chickencoopsofinstagram #chickensofinstagram #carolinacoops #scratchandpeckfeeds #scratchandpeckflock #meyerhatchery #meyerhatcherychickens | ꀭꍟꌗꌗꀤꉓꍏ ꃅꂦꉓꃅꌗꉓꃅꀤ꒒ꀸ | Maggie Antone · Spanish Pipe Dream

29K reactions · 3.3K shares | Oat grass is a great summer treat for your backyard chickens. This method is kind of the low-maintenance way. Google “fodder system” if you are interested in pre-soaking the grains and germinating indoors. Here we simply bought a bag of whole grain oats. 50 lbs for $20. Planted it in their chicken run and sectioned off the area for a few weeks. You could also make covers to do sections of your chicken’s run but here we did it the easiest way possible. Oat grass is very nutritious for chickens and also ducks! But it will only grow outside during spring and summer months because it’s an annual grass. Curious to see how long it takes them to mow it down! • • • • • • #backyardchickens #chickens #chicken #homestead #homesteading #chickencoop #chickenfeed #eggs | Kristin & Hank | Homesteading in PA | MOONLGHT · Long Cool Woman

If your window is super sunny/hot you may need to rinse twice a day to keep the lentils moist. We’re still pretty chilly over here in MA so I only rinsed once a day & they stayed moist enough.
