Brick Gothic is a kind of gothic architecture that was developed in Northern Europe and Baltic Sea region due lack of stone resources. Churches and civil buildings were constructed using bricks. Examples of this style are located in Germany (Lübeck), Denmark (Odense), Poland (Gdansk), Sweden (Malmö), Estonia (Tallin), among others.

Greifswald, Germany - Kloster Eldena by zug55, via Flickr. Ruins of Eldena monastery which was founded in 1199 by Cistercian monks. The monastery was heavily damaged by Wallenstein's troups in the Thirty Years War (1618-48) and has been withering away ever since. The ruins have claimed late fame because they inspired the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840).
