Here is a quick tutorial on how to break down a shirt so it can be used in a memory quilt or a recycled clothing quilt. The point of this tutorial is to show you how to get the maximum amount of fabric out of each garment. It's imperative that you get the most out of each and every piece of clothing you chose to use in a quilt. Here's how... Start with a shirt! This shirt is a medium so I can show you how much fabric you can get from ANY size. Of course an XXL would be best because it has a…

A Must-Know Technique for Every Quilter! While we all love beautiful hand and machine quilting, there are times when tying a quilt is the perfect choice. This process of securing the quilt layers adds a touch of vintage charm that makes a quilt even more endearing. You might want to tie a quilt when you’re …

shirts are lined up on a shelf in a closet, with one folded and the other unbuttoned

many different ties laid out on a white sheet with one folded up and the other untied

Recently I completed the most challenging project I've ever attempted. I was given several boxes of vintage neckties and asked to use them in a project. I machine appliqued the neckties to a base fabric that was reinforced with woven iron-on interfacing. I used smoke colored transparent nylon thread and a simple zig-zag. This cover is for a body pillow. It was made using whole ties…

a wall made up of squares and rectangles

This quilt was made using close to 15 different men's shirts with a modified, non-traditional log cabin design. I like to cut the shirts up before I start sewing. I break them down by removing all of the cuffs and buttons and then cut them all open at the shoulders and sides. Then I cut a million strips and put them all in a big pile next to my machine. Then I sew the modified log cabins (without pinning of course!!) and just lay them out on my design wall!

Last night I worked into the wee hours of the morning to finish the top for the second memory quilt. I was inspired by the Colorbrick quilt at Stitched in Color, but I had to adjust the measurements to maximize the oddly shaped shirt fabric. I'm planning to baste it today (the bane of my quilty existence) and start quilting on it this evening or tomorrow after church. I'm not as enamored with this quilt as I was with the first memory quilt, the Western Kaleidoscope, (although it is growing…
