Point Duty in the City

A wonderfully preserved image of a Manchester City Police officer on point duty in central in the city around 1914. Before the electronic traffic light became widespread, officers would control junctions during busy periods. This practice was known as point duty and each officer would be allocated a ‘point’ and set times at which he was to attend. http://www.gmpmuseum.com
