I feel like I haven't seen it on a menu in years. Is it not a thing anymore? There would always be thick wedges of cheese, some lovely homemade bread, proper slices of ham with salad and a big heap of pickle! I thought I'd recreate the joy of a Ploughman's in my herb bread! This is the easiest, no kneading, no proving, quick bake bread. Have this when it's still warm, with loads of butter and it will take you right back! Th recipe's below, let me know what you think, A x Feeds 4-6 500g self raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 110g butter 140g cheddar cut into 1cm squares A handful of finely chopped ham 6 sundried tomatoes finely chopped 80g small chunk sandwich pickle 1 tsp dried Thyme 1 tsp dried oregano 200ml milk (plus extra for her top) A little milk to brush on top Heat the oven to 190C (fan) Place the flour in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the baking powder and season wuth salt and pepper. Add the butter. Use your finger tips to rub it into the flour until it disappears. Stir in the cheddar, ham, sundried tomatoes, pickle and dried herbs until evenly dispersed. Add the milk Use your hands to mix it together until you have a thoroughly combined dough. Place the dough on a large greased or lined baking tray press it down until you have a thick circle roughly 20cm across. Brush the top of the loaf with a little milk. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. If the top is cooking too quickly, just cover it on foil for the last few minutes of baking.
