about
Train of Thought was recorded in Sydney with Nathan Cavaleri who also played mandolin, percussion and some tasty slide guitar on the track.
This one comes from a couple places. Two years ago I backpacked Europe and the UK solo for a few months and spent a lot of time on trains. Inspired by this I wrote “Train days” in my notes to prompt writing a song later. A while after getting home I got back to the prompt and tried to write something a bit Celtic to represent the train journeys especially in the UK. I failed on the Celtic vibe but pieced the song together in my favourite tuning; Open C. The message also comes from being stuck in a hard time, struggling and wanting change, as compared to being stuck on a train. But the moral of the story is happy as by the end of the song we’re off the train!
lyrics
Sitting round waiting for the world to change, You know how it is to be stuck on your way, Sitting round waiting for the day to fade, Not much you can do when you’re on a train hey
Passing by meadows look for sights to admire, You know how it is to be stuck on your way, Passing by people looking for the outlier, Not much you can do when you’re on a train hey
Caught in a stranger’s stare, What could be stranger than, A smile between you and me, A small price will get you there, Sight see without a care, A tale of true journey, You know how it is being stuck on your way, Not much you can do when you’re on a train hey
Get off at the station at the end of your ride, You know how it is to be off on your way, Get up and get out there’s no need to be tired, So much you can do when you’re off the train hey
Caught in a stranger’s stare, What can be stranger than, A smile between you and me, A small price will get you there, Sight see without a care, The tale of true journey, You know how it is to be stuck on your way, Not much you can do when you’re on a train hey, Sitting round waiting for the world to change, So much you can do when you’re the train hey
