Walt Whitman first published this collection, one of the most famous in American poetry, in 1855, and kept revising it over several decades until his death.

1881 (Massachusetts): Publication of the 1881 edition of this book in Boston was cut short after a District Attorney threatened criminal prosecution for the use of 'obscene' language in some of its poems. Publication was later resumed in Philadelphia.
