The Memphis Appeal

The Memphis Appeal was a newspaper published in Memphis, Tenessee in the 19th century.

Publication History

The Memphis Appeal began in 1841 as a weekly newspaper, becoming a daily (known as the Memphis Daily Appeal) in 1847. When Union troops occupied Memphis during the Civil War, the Confederate-supporting newspaper left town, returning after the war ended. (In the interim, Union forces published the Memphis Union Appeal.) The Memphis Appeal merged with the Memphis Avalanche in 1890 and with the Memphis Daily Commercial in 1894. The merged newspaper, the Commercial Appeal, is published today.
