The Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society has published a Memoirs and Proceedings series since its founding. Its exact title has varied somewhat over time.
The Society was founded in 1781 as the Literary and Philosophical Society of Manchester. It published its first Memoirs volume in 1785. The first series ran for 5 volumes from then until 1798. The second series ran for 15 volumes from 1805 to 1860. The third series ran for 10 volumes from 1862 to 1887. The fourth series ran for 10 volumes from 1888 to 1896. The next volume was number 41, reflecting the overall series numbering, and later volumes were similarly numbered. No issue or contribution copyright renewals were found for this serial.
