The Green Book

The Green Book was the generic name of a regularly published guidebook for African American travelers, intended to help them find services and destinations that would welcome them, during a time of widespread racial discrimination and legal segregation. It was published by Victor H. Green and Company.

Publication History

The first edition of The Green Book came out in 1936, focusing on the New York area, The 1937 edition expanded to national scale, and some later editions were international in scope, or focused on particular modes of travel like motoring or railroads. The Green Book ceased publication in the 1960s.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1937-1941, 1947-1957, 1959-1964: The New York Public Library has made available 21 editions.
• 1949: The University of Michigan has a site with the 1949 edition.
• 1956: The University of South Carolina has the spring 1956 edition with an interactive map of locations featured in the book.
