The American Farmer

The American Farmer is the usual title of a farming journal published in Baltimore for much of the 19th century. The exact title varied over time.

Publication History

The American Farmer began in 1819. In 1834 that title was replaced by a new series titled Farmer and Gardener, and Live-Stock Breeder and Manager, which became simply Farmer and Gardener in 1835. In 1839, that title was replaced by the new series American Farmer, and Spirit of the Agricultural Journals of the Day, which then became The American Farmer again in 1849. Another new series began in 1870. Publication may have been suspended in 1871. The following year the title returned as American Farmer and Rural Register, before returning again to The American Farmer in 1874. It ran until 1897.

• 1859-1860: HathiTrust has series 5, volume 1.
• 1866-1869: HathiTrust has series 6, volumes 1 and 2, and parts of volumes 3 and 4.
