The American Missionary

The American Missionary was a magazine on religious and missionary issues (including racial issues). It was published in the late 19th and early 20th century by the American Missionary Association (and sometimes by various Congregational missionary societies).

Publication History

The American Missionary began publication in 1846. Volume numbering restarted at 1 in 1857, and also seems to have reset (possibly to count pre-1857 volumes) sometime in the late 1870s. No issue or contribution copyright renewals were found for this serial. The American Missionary ceased publication with the March 1934 issue.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1857: HathiTrust has volume 1 of a new series.
• 1861-1862, 1864, 1867-1876, 1878-1923, 1925-1928: HathiTrust has page images for selected Civil War era issues, and volumes 11-20, 22-24, 32-77, and 79-82. Some later volumes may be searchable but not readable online here.
• 1878-1882, 1884-1885, 1887-1891, 1894-1896, 1898, 1900: Project Gutenberg has transcriptions of most issues in volumes 32-36, 41-44, and 50, and selected issues from other years in the late 19th century.
