Committees of the California state legislature produced a Report series on "Un-American Activities" in the mid-20th century. The report series focused primarily on Communist groups, and other groups and activities suspected to be associated with them.
California's Joint Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities in California was convened in 1941. In its early years, it was chaired by state senator Jack Tenney (and was thus nicknamed the Tenney Committee), and sponsored by both legislative houses. It published its first report in 1943. The committee was reorganized purely as a Senate committee in the late 1940s. The Senate committee continued to issue reports in the same series beginning in 1948. It was redesignated a subcommittee in the early 1960s, and published its last report in 1970.
