Debates of the Senate of Canada (Hansard) is the official report of the debates and discussion of the Senate, the "upper" (but largely advisory) parliamentary house in Canada.

Publication History

The Canadian Senate was created in 1867 by the British North America Act. Official reports of the debates commenced in 1875, but unofficial reports have ben issued for previous sessions. The Senate continues to meet and debate today.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1867-1996: The Canadian Parliament has historic Senate debates of the first 35 Parliaments.
• 1872-1900: Early Canadiana Online has Senate debates for the end of the first Parliament, and the second through eighth parliaments. The official publication starts in 1875.
• 1867-1869, 1871, 1875-1876, 1878-1904, 1906-1916, 1918-1920, 1922-1940, 1942-1945: HathiTrust has many debate reports through 1945.
• 1996-present: The Canadian Parliament web site has online Hansards for sessions from 1996 to the present.

• Early Canadiana Online has some reconstituted debates for 1867-1871. These are not official debate records, so they do not technically fit into this serial, but they may be of interest to Senate researchers.
