The Communist

The Communist was a name for newspapers published by the Communist Party of America, and various factions and splinter groups, between 1919 and 1922. Intended to be the party's official organ, it was published in rival editions for part of its run.

Publication History

The Communist began publication with the Jul 19, 1919 issue. In September, it absorbed the publication "Revolutionary Age" and started a new series beginning at volume 1, number 1. In 1920, a minority faction of the party published their own version of the newspaper for a few issues, before forming the rival United Communist Party. The Communist ran publication with the first issue of volume 3, dated April 1921, after which time the Communist Party of America and the United Communist Party merged. A new version of The Communist then began in July, running through 1922, though it too saw a breakaway "Central Caucus" faction publish at least two issues of its own in early 1922.
