The Critic

The Critic was the short title of a newspaper published in Washington, DC in the 19th century. Its full title varied over time.

Publication History

The Critic began in 1868, and initially focused on criticism of musical and theatrical performances. It was renamed The Daily Critic in 1872, The Evening Critic in 1881, and The Washington Critic in 1885. In 1888 it was briefly combined with The Washington Post by a new owner, but then resumed as its own newspaper in 1889. It was renamed The Capital and Critic for a few issues, followed by a few issues of The Evening Capital and Critic, followed by the Evening Capital, all in July 1889. The paper was then renamed The Washington Critic again in January 1890, The Daily Critic again in May 1890, and The Critic again in December 1890. It made one final name change to The Critic and Record in 1891, and then ceased publication in 1896.
