The Gift

The Gift was an annual anthology of stories and poems marketed as a gift book around the Christmas holidays, published in Philadelphia by Carey and Hart in the 1830s and 1840s, and initially edited by Eliza Leslie. The full title varied somewhat over time. Among its many contributors was Edgar Allan Poe, who published some of his most well-known stories for the first time in this annual.

Publication History

The first volume of The Gift was dated for 1836, and was published in 1835. No volumes were published for 1838 or 1841. Carey and Hart's last volume in this series was for 1845. Some other publishers also produced annuals called The Gift that appear to be unrelated to this one.
