The Handbook of Private Schools

The Handbook of Private Schools was an annual guide to North American private schools published, and initially edited, by Porter Sargent. The title varied somewhat over time.

Publication History

The first Handbook was published in 1915 as "A Handbook of the Best Private Schools of the United States and Canada". New Handbook editions were usually published annually. Editions published by Porter Sargent himself, who died in 1951, gradually accumulated long introductory sections on education and civilization in general. The first copyright-renewed issue is 1953 (34th edition). We know of no actively copyright-renewed contributions. (More details) The last edition we know of The Handbook of Private Schools was the 94th edition, published in 2013.

• 1915-1923, 1925-1928: HathiTrust has the 1st-8th and 10-12th editions freely readable online. Some later editions may be searchable but not readable online here.
• 1915: We list the 1st edition, titled "A Handbook of the Best Private Schools of the United States and Canada".
• 1916: We list the 2nd edition, titled "A Handbook of American Private Schools".
• 1920: We list the 6th edition, titled "A Handbook of American Private Schools".

• 1938: The Internet Archive has the 22nd edition, titled "A Handbook of Private Schools for American Boys and Girls", in a low resolution scan.
• 1947: The Internet Archive has the 30th edition, titled "A Handbook of Private Schools for American Boys and Girls", in a low resolution scan.
