Index Medicus

Index Medicus was an American periodical indexing medical and life sciences publications. (There is a Wikipedia article about this serial.)

Publication History

Index Medicus began in 1879. Its first series ran 21 volumes from 1879 to 1899, its second series ran 18 volumes from 1903 to 1920, and its third series ran 6 volumes from 1921 to 1927. In 1927 it was acquired by the American Medical Association, which published it as Quarterly Cumulative Index Medicus until 1956. The National Library of Medicine took it over in 1960, publishing it as Index Medicus/Cumulated Index Medicus. No issue or contribution copyright renewals were found for this serial. It ran in print form until 2004. The National Library of Medicine's PubMed database now covers the publications that Index Medicus once covered, as well as many other publications.
