The Independent Florida Alligator is the current name of the daily student newspaper of the University of Florida. (There is a Wikipedia article about this serial.)
The Independent Florida Alligator began in 1906 as The University News. In 1912 it became sponsored by the university and was renamed the Florida Alligator. In the early 1970s, it became independent of the university and was renamed The Independent Florida Alligator, the name it retains to this day. Some issues during the summer months in the 1940s were titled the Summer Gator.
