The Journal of Prison Discipline and Philanthropy was an annual publication of what is now the Pennsylvania Prison Society, on prisoner welfare and reform.

Publication History

The Journal of Prison Discipline and Philanthropy began publication in 1845 as the Pennsylvania Journal of Prison Discipline and Philanthropy. In 1862, a new series began. The journal ceased publication in 1920, and was followed in 1921 by a successor journal, Prison Journal, that is still published today.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1845-1920: HathiTrust has volumes 1-16 of the first series, and volumes 1-59 of the second series. Volumes might not be listed in order.
• 1847-1849: Google Books has scanned a bound copy of volumes 3 and 4 of the original series.
• 1849, 1852-1853, 1862-1864, 1901, 1907-1909, 1911-1912, 1919: Project Gutenberg has transcriptions of selected issues.
• 1860: Google Books has scanned a bound copy of volume 15 of the original series.
• 1862-1867: Google Books has scanned a bound copy of volumes 1-6 of the second series. Image quality is variable.
• 1880-1887: Google Books has scanned a bound copy of volumes 19-26 of the second series. Image quality is variable.
