The Lancaster Gazette

The Lancaster Gazette was a newspaper published in Lancaster, Ohio in the 19th and early 20th century. The exact title varied over time.

Publication History

The original incarnation of The Lancaster Gazette was founded in 1826. It was retitled The Lancaster Ohio Gazette in 1827, The Lancaster Gazette again in 1829, Lancaster Ohio Gazette in 1831, and The Gazette later in 1831. It absorbed the Lancaster Enquirer in 1832, and published as the Gazete and Enquirer until 1835, when it became The Lancaster Gazette again until 1837. That year, The Lancaster Ohio Express began and became the Gazette and Express in 1838, the Lancaster Gazette and Express in 1839, the Gazette and Express again in 1840, the Lancaster Gazette and Express again in 1844, and The Lancaster Gazette again in 1846. It became The Weekly Lancaster Gazette in 1852, the American Lancaster Gazette in 1855, and The Gazette and Democrat in 1860 before reverting to The Weekly Lancaster Gazette later that year. In 1863 it was renamed The Lancaster Gazette. Semi-weekly and daily editions came later on. In 1936, The Lancaster Gazette merged with the Lancaster Daily Eagle to form the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, which continues to publish today.
