The Strand Magazine

The Strand Magazine was the name of a monthly London-based magazine that published short stories and popular nonfiction in the late 19th and early 20th century. Perhaps best known nowadays for publishing Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, it also ran stories by many other well-known authors. (There is a Wikipedia article about this serial.)

Publication History

The Strand Magazine began publication in 1891, and ran until 1950. An American edition was published from 1891 to 1916. No issue copyright renewals were found for this serial. The first copyright-renewed contribution is from March 1929 (v. 77 no. 459). (More details) The name was revived in 1998 for an American magazine focusing on mysteries and other short stories; that magazine continues to publish today.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1891-1928: HathiTrust has the first 75 volumes in page image form. Later volumes are searchable but not readable online. Access to volumes after 1898 may be restricted outside the United States.
• 1891-1922: Downloadable versions of the first 64 volumes have also been uploaded to the Internet Archive, but are not ordered by date. (Move the cursor over the links to see what dates go with a particular volume.)
• 1891, 1893-1894, 1899, 1904: Project Gutenberg has volumes 1, 5, and 7, and various issues from other volumes as transcribed, illustrated HTML. (Many of the transcribed issues include Holmes stories.)
