Southern Literary Messenger was a journal "devoted to every department of literature and the fine arts", published in the 19th century (and in a brief 20th-century incarnation as well). (There is a Wikipedia article about this serial.)
Southern Literary Messenger began publication in 1834, and ceased publication in 1864. In 1846 and 1847, after absorbing Southern and Western Magazine and Review, it was known as The Southern and Western Literary Messenger and Review, but reverted to its former name after that. The magazine was revived in 1939, only to cease publication again in 1945.
