Census of Governments

Census of Governments is a series of volumes summarizing the results of the Census of Governments, a comprehensive survey taken by the US Census Bureau every five years on the finances, resources, and employment of state and local goverments.

Publication History

The first Census of Governments was conducted in 1957. As of November 2022, the volumes for 2022 are in preparation. Listings below are organized by the year of the census, which may be earlier than the volumes were actually published.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1957: HathiTrust has all 6 volumes for the 1957 Census.
• 1962: HathiTrust has what appears to be all 7 volumes for the 1962 Census.
• 1967: HathiTrust has what appears to be all 7 volumes for the 1967 Census.
• 1972: HathiTrust has what appears to be all published volumes for the 1972 Census. (Volumes 1-6 and 8-9 were published; volume 7 was not.)
• 1977-1987: HathiTrust has selected volumes from the 1977, 1982, and 1987 Censuses.
• 1992: HathiTrust has the first 4 volumes from the 1992 Census.
• 1997: HathiTrust has volumes 1 and 3 and volume 4 numbers 1-2 and 4-6 from the 1997 Census. (Volume 2 appears not to have been published.)
• 1997: HathiTrust also has volumes 4 number 3 from the 1997 Census, "Finances of County Governments".
