United States Reports

United States Reports is the official record of the decisions, orders, and opinions of the United States Supreme Court.

Publication History

United States Reports began in 1790, retrospectively covering cases as far back as 1754. The first 90 volumes were prepared by private Supreme Court reporters, and went by various names. (The first 4 volumes, by Dallas, also included Pennsylvania court cases.) The title "United States Reports" was first used in the 91st volume, but the title, and the volume sequencing, is retrospectively applied to the entire series. It is still published today.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1754-2007: HathiTrust has volumes 1-187, 189-546, and 548-554 (The first volume is dated 1790 in its first edition, but retrospectively covers cases back to 1754.) Gaps in this sequence are covered below.
• 1902: HathiTrust also has volume 188.
• 1991-recent: The US Supreme Court website has PDFs for bound volumes from 502 onward. These are the final official rulings, published notably later than the first version of opinoins. (As of early 2019, bound volumes had not been issued past 2013.)
• recent-present: The US Supreme Court also has opinions for recent terms. These are preliminary versions, subject to revision before being issued in bound volumes.
