Wellman's Literary Miscellany

Wellman's Literary Miscellany was the original name of a 19th century American literary peridical, originally published in Detroit by J. K. Wellman, and that went through numerous changes of title and ownership through its history.

Publication History

Wellman's Literary Miscellany began publishing in 1849. In 1851, it was taken over by a new Detroit publisher, and renamed the Monthly Literary Miscellany. In 1853, the name was again changed to the Western Literary Miscellany, and then the Western Literary Cabinet. That periodical seems to have ceased publication in the mid-1850s, though it may have succeeded by a "Wellman's Literary Emporium". A new "Wellman's Miscellany", also based in Michigan, and with a leadoff article by John S. Wellman, ran from 1870 to 1873.

• 1849: HathiTrust has volume 1 of this serial.
• 1850: HathiTrust has volume 3 of this serial, bound with a volume of the "Family Favorite" (which has no obvious relation to this serial).
• 1851: Google Books has volumes 4 and 5 of this serial, renamed this year as the Monthly Literary Miscellany.
• 1852: Google Books has volumes 6 and 7 of this serial.
• 1852-1853: Google Books has volumes 6-8 of this serial, along with Volume 9, issue 1 (apparently the last issue before the "Literary Cabinet" name change).
• 1870-1871: Google Books has volumes 1-4 of the new "Wellman's Miscellany".
