Works Issued by the Hakluyt Society is a series of travel narratives published by the Hakluyt Society in London.

Publication History

The first of the Works Issued by the Hakluyt Society was published in 1847. The first 50 publications were initially issued without numbering, but were numbered retrospectively. The first series (100 volumes) was published from 1847 through 1899; the second series (190 volumes) was published from 1899 through 2000; the third series (29 volumes as of mid-2022) began in 1999; and an Extra series (47 volumes as of mid-2022) began in 1903. No issue or contribution copyright renewals were found for this serial. (More details) Publication continues today. The order in which volumes were numbered was not always the order in which they were initially published.

Persistent Archives of Complete Issues

• 1847-1869, 1871-1904, 1906-1908, 1912-1915, 1918-1925: HathiTrust has first series numbers 1-3, 5-42, 44-65, 67-100; second series numbers 1-11, 13-15, 17-23, 25-27, 29, 31-43, 45-46, and 48-57; and extra series numbers 1-3. Some of these volumes are reprint editions. Access to some volumes may be restricted outside the United States. This listing may also include a volume numbered 1 and dated 1842 that is not actually part of this serial.
• 1883: HathiTrust also has first series number 66, "Diary of Richard Cocks", in a reprint edition. Access may be restricted outside the United States.
• 1907: We have a listing for second series number 9, "The Travels of Pedro Teixeira".
• 1905: We have a listing for second series number 12, "A Geographical Account of Countries Round the Bay of Bengal, 1669 to 1679" by Thomas Bowrey.
• 1907: We have a listing for second series number 22, "History of the Incas" by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa.
• 1908-1910, 1912, 1916: We have a listing for second series numbers 23-25, 30, and 40, "The True History of the Conquest of New Spain" by Bernal Díaz del Castillo.
• 1906: HathiTrust also has extra series number 29, which is volume 16 of "Hakluytus Posthumus, or Purchas His Pilgrimes". Access may be restricted outside the United States.
