The Impending Crisis of the South is a book by Hinton Rowan Helper published shortly before the American Civil War, arguing for the abolition of slavery on the grounds that slavery hurt the interests of most Southern whites. Many editions, some revised and expanded from the original, were published between then and the outbreak of the Civil War. An abridged version, Compendium of the Impending Crisis of the South, first appeared in 1859, and was used as campaign literature by the nascent Republican Party.
