There is something extraordinary that happens when like-minded artists combine their abilities to make music together. For Brit Hansen and Andrew Sutherland, Seattle neighbors, friends, and label-mates, what started as a one-off collaborative musical endeavor in Brit's basement studio soon became an adventure in sharing beats and pieces over Zoom chats after Brit moved house during the pandemic.

Brit is a beloved figure in the Pacific Northwest electronic music community, not only for her role as part of tech-house duo Jacob London, but also for her solo output of dreamy, synth-heavy leftfield soundscapes as Hanssen. Andrew’s journey from playing in bands to solo production and DJing led him to scoring film and television and releasing his own classically-tinged, beat-forward atmospheric sonics as Secret School.

Guided only by agreed-upon parameters of tempo and key, each of them worked independently, bringing their efforts together to create the five-song Hanssen x Secret School EP for Otake Records. The result is a unique synthesis of their individual sounds, full of soothing slow grooves and dreamy, heartfelt soundscapes that would be equally satisfying as the soundtrack for a blissed-out beach party as it would be listening alone with a set of headphones on a rainy Sunday.
