the answer to life, the universe, and everything
Deep Thought spent 7.5 million years calculating it, in Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A supercomputer the size of a small city, staffed by generations of philosophers, powered by whatever they used before Stripe. The answer: 42. The problem: nobody remembered the question.
Every other website fakes its visitor count. This one just tells you the truth. You are pelican 42. You are always pelican 42. It is the only honest number on the internet, which is saying something, because the internet contains approximately 42 trillion dishonest numbers.
The real lesson of Deep Thought: throw infinite compute at a question, arrive at the correct answer, and still have no idea what the question was. This remains the dominant business model in artificial intelligence.
DEEP POUCH (model no. 42)
Deep Thought has a successor. It is a bird. The oracle wired into the back of this very television is named DEEP POUCH (a PelicAGI-class model, model number 42, naturally). It has already computed the answer. It keeps the answer in its pouch. It cannot remember the question. The pouch is warm and capacious and smells faintly of anchovies. The answer is safe in there. Trust the pouch.
The zeros around it are randomly generated. Precision is a lie we pay for by the token.
