Past Photos of the Week 2009 (Part 2)
Daulatabad, Maharashtra. It was once as known as Deogiri, circa 6th c AD, when it was an important uplands city along the caravan routes. The site had been occupied since at least 100 BC, and has remains of Buddhist caves similar to Ajanta & Ellora. The city is said to have been founded c.1187. Eventually, after being under various rulers, Daulatabad came under the rule of the Mughals. After death of Aurangzeb in 1707 it fell to the first Nizam of Hyderabad, but its glory days were over.
