LONG LANE, DALLAS COUNTY, ca. 1910. Long Lane, located in southeastern Dallas County, first had a post office in 1850. Early businesses were located along the muddy road, which later became Highway 32. The two-story building with the curious checkerboard paint pattern housed G. M. Legan Dry Goods. The next building was a barbershop and restaurant, followed by a merchandise store/ post office, a blacksmith shop and a hotel. [SHS of MO-Columbia Photo Collection #026073]

Up until just a few years ago, the Galena area, and all of the Tri-State Mining District, was dotted with chat piles and mine tailings.The lead, zinc, and other minerals began to leech into the shallow groundwater, contaminating wells and nearby streams and rivers. The EPA got involved. Most of the old sites have been returned to their natural state. Few mining remnants can be seen other than buildings, foundations, and scattered mining equipment.
The ghost town of Phenix, Missouri is located in Greene County, close to Ash Grove. Phenix was a company town that existed for the sole purpose of mining marble and limestone from the adjacent quarry. It was unique in that the town had a library, an orchestra, movies, and a church with a full-time minister. Oddly enough, Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde fame also attended elementary school here for a time.

Lebanon, MO has long been home to an oft traveled trail along the edge of the Ozarks, beginning when the Wyota and Osage Indians roamed the area. During the Civil War, the trail became known as the "Wire Road” because of the telegraph lines installed along it between St. Louis and Springfield. Then, in the late 1920s, Route 66 was born and roughly followed the same path the Indians had marked. Today the "trail" is called I-44.
