Check it out. Desperately needed some Roman shades for these two big windows in my kitchen but they're expensive so I decided to make my own out of shower curtains and some old blinds and they turned out darling. I love the way they look. They've got the cute little pleats. Super simple. This DIY has been around forever. I actually think I did this. My second house or second apartment I ever rented. I did this in many, many moons ago. So, let me show you how simple this is to make your own Roman shades. First of all, start with mini blinds. I actually had some thrifted but they were too small. So, I had to go get some at Walmart that fit my windows. Just take a drill and screw in your little tiny brackets up top, super simple. Actually, had one of these shower curtains but I went ahead and purchased another one so I could make two blinds from my windows. First thing you want to do is lay your shower curtain flat or whatever piece of fabric you're using. Put your line on top of it and then cut all the way around it and give yourself about two to three inches seam allowance on each side. Then you're going to come through and see how one side I did not have to cut because it was actually the edge of the shower curtain but these other raw edges I'm going to have to fold over. Give a quick little iron too. So you get that nice little edge and then come through with some fabric glue, E6000, whatever you got and glue that edge down. So basically you're looking at a piece of fabric about two to three inches wider on all edges than your blinds. You just want to glue those hems in place. Then, you're going to take your actual blind and you're going to place the piece of fabric that you want facing out on the very front of the blind at the top. Normally, where your cord would be. So, you're basically going to put that piece of fabric, glue it to the front. Then, you're going to hold the piece up which you're going to have to have somebody help you with and pull your blinds down. These are cordless but it doesn't matter cord or not. It's the same DIY. Once you've got it all down. Have someone help you lay it flat so your fabric stays flat and all of your blinds stay flat. Then we're going to come through and we're going to remove at 10 to 15. It just depends on how many pleats you want. They're super easy to break off. We're going to leave you know a couple two, three, four, five, whatever you want and then in between I think I removed maybe 10 or 11 of them in between each of my blinds that I left. Then what you're going to do is make sure all your little strings are straight. Do not cut those strings. We're going to come with a little bit of glue underneath each of those and up around the bottom and just glue everything in place. Once everything dries, you're done. Then, you can just pop it up in the window. Occasionally, when I've done this, I have taken another piece of fabric and put it on the other side. So, both sides are completely covered and have the fabric on them but because I leave these up all day long, I never pull them down during the day, you never see the string and at night, you definitely don't see it. So, it's really just up to you how much coverage you want. Happy of cycling you.
