This Edamame Is One Of My (and My Kids’) Favorite Veggies!
Ahh, this. Now this is a crave-able vegetable.
Years ago, we had a homemade sushi party with my sushi-expert cousin. He brought all the sushi materials, but he told me to make garlic edamame because it would be really good with the whole spread.
So I did. And through the whole night, I found myself reaching across the table repeatedly for just one more piece. And then just one more.
I love this edamame for a few reasons.
- Easy and crowd-pleasing for all ages
- Hey protein!
- Perfectly garlicky, but not a kick in the face
Some people might prefer minced garlic on their edamame, but I find the intensity of freshly sautéed garlic chunks up in your mouth to be a bit much. Know what I mean? If minced garlic is your journey, I respect it. But we love this method that just infuses the oil with a bit of garlic flavor and then coats all the yummy little edamame in that silky flavor.
And now that I have two little kids, I would like to make a case for this being one of the most kid-friendly veggies of all time! My four-year-old, who almost never touches a vegetable, explored her way through a big bowl of this garlic edamame (pre-chili crisp) and declared herself an “edamame queen”.

In the recipe, chili crisp is noted as optional. So, if you want this spicy, be sure to add that! Or, when you’re sautéing in the pan, you can sprinkle on some red pepper flakes.
Typically, edamame is served alongside sushi. But anything you’re making that is Asian-inspired and could use a side of vegetables or protein works great. Here are a few ideas:

Traditionally edamame in the pod is used for this, but shelled edamame will work as well if you have shelled frozen edamame.
The goal is to remove the beans from the pod and also to get some of that delicious sauce along with it! You’ll use your teeth to break the edge and suck out the beans and then discard the pod. Repeat!
It does! Store in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat in the microwave or on the stove with a little extra soy sauce.

Ingredients
- one 14-ounce bag frozen edamame
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon chili crisp (optional)
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Cook Edamame: In a wide skillet, bring several cups of water to a boil. Add a big pinch of salt; throw the frozen edamame in there. Boil for 4-5 minutes.
- Dry: Drain and rinse the edamame with cold water to prevent it from cooking further. Pat dry with paper towels (this will prevent oil splatters for ya).
- Get The Garlic Going: Wipe the skillet dry, then heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. Smash the 2 cloves of garlic, but leave them in one piece. Toss them into the skillet with the oil to infuse their flavor into the oil for a few minutes. Do not brown them – we just want that oil mellow but fragrant with garlic.
- Toss All Together: Add edamame to the skillet with the oil and garlic; toss it all together for a few minutes to get it nice and sizzly. Add a splash of soy sauce. (Keep this step to only a minute or two so the color of the edamame stays bright green).
- Discard the garlic cloves. Transfer to a large bowl, if you want – but I’ve eaten this right out of the pan many times. Get some chili crisp on there, and season with salt.
- To eat: grab onto a piece, and use your teeth to pull the little edamame beans out of the shell while holding it! Discard the shell and repeat! You’ll pick up all that flavor on the outside of the edamame in the process and it is finger-licking delicious. My kids love this stuff!

Great! Simple Edamame recipe. I was in pinch grab a bag of frozen Edamame cook in microwave. Followed your recipe. Family loved them and will definitely put on menu more often. I enjoy cooking & trying easy recipe that doesn’t require many ingredients.
