Signal to Ottawa: We'll Leave Canada Before We Help You Spy on Users (iphoneincanada.ca)

Community iconc/privacy@lemmy.ml by

Signal is drawing a hard line on the federal government’s proposed surveillance legislation: comply with Bill C-22 or leave the country. The secure messaging app says it would rather ditch the Canadian market than be forced to weaken the privacy protections it has built its reputation on. In an interview with The Globe and Mail

Proxmox NFS shares for Docker

Community iconc/selfhosted@lemmy.world by
trilobite@lemmy.ml

So here is my dilemma. I have a Truenas server that basically acts as a file server. I also have a little machine running Proxmox. I have an NFS share on the Proxmox machine for saving VM backups so that they are secure. On the Proxmox VM, I want to install docker instances. Some of them require large data repositories so I can’t have the data stored on the VM. I’m thinking of creating an “apps” dataset on the Truenas machine, then exporting it via NFS and mounting on the VM. Then I redirect all the Docker volumes on this NFS share. Say I have Docker_App1 on the Proxmox VM, then I would create a folder in the /mnt/Truenas_share/Docker_App1. Do you think this will work? The alternative is to create an individual dataset on the Truenas machine for each Docker_App but this feels overkill and a nightmare to setup and maintain. How are you managing Docker volumes over NFS?

Has anyone tried Nym VPN? I know it’s different from Mullvad VPN, Proton VPN, and IVPN as it’s decentalized, but aside from that, what else makes it stand out from the others? It looks interesting and was thinking about trying it out, but I know it’s a newer VPN and I haven’t been able to find reviews about it and wanted to see if it’s even worth it.

Recently I’ve installed luci-app-banip on my OpenWrt router and blocked most countries from accessing my services on my network. Not seeing why I would want any of that traffic I also blocked the whole of the ARIN registry, responsible for IP addresses from Canada and the United States. Edit: Note this is only for inbound traffic. Outbound traffic is allowed no matter the target country.

Digital ID in the UK: The Government Says It Is Voluntary, But Your Employer Might Not Give You a Choice (ibtimes.co.uk)

Community iconc/privacy@lemmy.ml by
StopTech@lemmy.today

Even if an employer doesn’t require the new ID, remember the UK government said that all IDs will soon have to be verified digitally. That suggests the employer will send the ID image or data to a government server which will respond with whether the person is allowed to work. So all IDs will essentially be turned into digital IDs and the government can make individuals unemployable if they do something the government doesn’t like.

DVB-T2 receiving & re-streaming?

Our family watches TV trough IPTV and via streaming services and it’s been fine enough for quite some time. However, now one of our broadcast companies got in a fight about streaming contract with our IPTV provider and we lost a few of the channels. Not that big of a deal for me personally, but apparently there’s some shows the rest of the family wants to see. This isn’t the first time and likely it won’t be the last.

YSK some unconventional ways you can contribute to OpenStreetMap

Community iconc/opensource@lemmy.ml by
overcast@lemmy.zip

These are super disorganized thoughts. To clarify the title, I’m targeting people who may be interested in contributing to a project like OpenStreetMap but aren’t interested in the narrow focus of things like roads, sidewalks, bike paths, houses, etc. I aim to capture some of the insane breadth and detail OpenStreetMap accommodates, but without just throwing you at the wiki and telling you to go nuts. That said, here’s a list the wiki maintains of some map features. Note that these are standardized essentially by consensus/usage, so if you think something’s missing, you can bring it up in forums like the wiki and try to gain consensus to formalize it into a standard.

I’ve been travelling a lot lately and am looking for a good way to turn a hotel’s TV into a jellyfin client without needing a super long wire from a laptop or something, just plug it into the tv and you’re good. LineageOS has some stuff but it seems like everything needs a specific device made at a specific time and specific patch number for some hacky implementation, is there anything that is a good package deal, wont blow the bank, doesn’t need much tinkering and will always work? I hate KODI btw, the interface is terrible. Something android related seems ideal. The point is to be as easy and lazy as possible, I get off the flight tired as hell and I want to just slam it into the TV and die a little without fiddling with anything and not get tangled on wires

Game Library for Friends and Family

Community iconc/selfhosted@lemmy.world by

Hello all! I have never selfhosted before, but I have a pretty extensive digital library of videogames (ROMs from a couple dozen retro systems among other executables) that my friends have expressed interested in having access. What’s the ideal software for giving them access to the library hosted on my drives? I’m picturing something like a selfhosted Steam where they see all of the games and can search via retro system, game tags, by name, etc. and each of could keep track of separate user accounts by playtime, favorites, recently played, etc. I use RetroArch and a few standalone emulators myself connected to RetroAchievements, so I figured they would need to download any emulators on their ends and then just pick and play the games as they see fit without having to have their own copies of the games.

I’m currently facing a dilemma. Right now, I have a synology NAS that I use to host my homelab containers (*arr, pi-hole, vaultwarden, Plex, etc).

I lot of the hostnames or IP addresses that your android devices connect to without your direct knowledge or consent(1) are hard to find anything relevant about, except for the fact that Google owns a lot of the domains and IP ranges. This article helped me a lot when deciding which end points to block(2).

Paperless

I have looked at paperless in the past and just asked why? I just spent a little time setting it up to see what it was about, then I spent hours configuring it and my email server creating paperless email addresses that other emails forward to! I cannot believe I have lived this long without it.

hass-closest-intent: Fuzzy intent matcher for HomeAssistant. Garbled STT output in, actual intent out. (github.com)

Basically, STT quality has kept me from switching to HomeAssistant’s voice assistant features. The default matcher (Hassil) is waaaaaaay to strict, and LLMs are slow, constly, and/or a privacy nightmare, plus I don’t like them.

Wanted to share https://nitter.net/ with you all. Great front end and I believe you can even selfhost it yourself. No account needed, just add any username after the trailing / or within the search field and boom, profit. Enjoy!
