The Battle of Tarawa | Kiribati

Postcard
The Battle of Tarawa was a battle that was fought on 20–23 November 1943. It took place at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, and was part of Operation Galvanic, the U.S. invasion of the Gilberts islands. Nearly 6,400 Japanese, Koreans, and Americans died in the fighting, mostly on and around the small island of Betio, in the extreme southwest of Tarawa Atoll.

The Gilbert Islands are a chain of sixteen atolls and coral islands in the Pacific Ocean about halfway between Papua New Guinea and Hawaii. They form the main part of Kiribati.

Kiribati is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. Tarawa is the capital city. With over 50,000 inhabitants, half of the country’s population lives on the atoll of Tarawa.

The sad part is that Kiribati is expected to be the first country to lose all its land territory to global warming.

Stamps
The stamps are part of a series of 16 stamps, issued in 2013. The theme is water transportation.

Thank you soo much David!

A postcard from Kiribati

Postcard
Kiribati is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere in the middle between the islands of Hawaii and French Polynesia.

The Republic consists of thirty three atolls and islands, spread across approximately a third of a million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, of which 21 islands are inhabited. Kiribati’s Fanning Island and Kiritimati (Christmas Island) are perfect spots for surfing.

Kiribati is believed to be one of the first nations to get lost because of rising sea levels due to climate change. Therefore the leaders of Kiribati are considering an unusual backup plan: moving the population to Fiji.

Stamp
One out of a set of 12 bird stamps, issued 2008:  the Black-tailed Godwit.
