Pizza2047 No hooks but I'm hooked! Just stream of consciousness style rhymes with super interesting beats and instrumentals from two complimentary voices. I'll be having this on repeat for a while... Favorite track: Gazpacho.

Suramin Ra'a Easily my favourite album of 2024. I can't think of any album from last year that captures this vibe. Feels like I'm listening to a compilation of Rawkus era radio cyphers on acid. Olasegun's production is ear candy that maintains the zaniness you'd expect from a Lungs and Phiik project.

I love how on PSG Grip, the flows get progressively more chaotic until the beat itself seems to collapse. Favorite track: PSG Grip (feat. Cise Greeny).

about

Phiik & Lungs are an abstract attack from another planet. The iron galaxy built and reimagined. Next generation heirs to Company Flow with the clocks exploding a quarter-century ahead. New New York subterranean heroes laughing in the rubble, rewinding casket drops, and making enemies fume. The sound of reality unraveling or the chaos rumbling in the back of your brain. Pick your poison.

Envision a symphony of deconstructed soul loops played at very loud volume right before you get flattened by a subway car. This is the feeling of their forthcoming opus Carrot Season. Released on POW Recordings and produced entirely produced by OLASEGUN, Phiik and Lungs blend golden age instincts with irreverent truth-to-power funcrushing – as displaying pristinely on the word-drunk atom bombs “Uber Dents” and “Gazpacho.” They’re joined by an all-city cast of the East Coast underground including, YL, AKAI SOLO, Wavy Bagels, Michael Christmas, Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon, Homeboy Sandman, and Fatboi Sharif.

Representing the Brooklyn hip hop collective Tase Grip, the two swordsmen are committed to exploring the farthest reaches of the art form and known universe. Last year’s fourth installment of their Another Planet series – fully produced under Lungs’ “LoneSword” alias – received a rave review from Pitchfork, with writer Paul Thompson boasting that their “raps are muscular, verbose, and agitated with the cacophonous world outside.” He describes Phiik as of the Def Jux lineage, approaching his verses with similar “halting rhythms, onomatopoeia, and the percussive qualities of language”. Lungs, on the other hand, “raps like lines of code flitting across a screen, ceaseless and seamless. Your brain needs time to attune to the sheer amount of information contained in his verses.”

Or as Son Raw wrote on POW’s 2023 year-end list, Phiik and Lungs are “a revelation – a bright new counterpoint to both weeded out cadences and easy-bake drill approaches…their hard-bop rhyming is happy to embrace NYC’s chaos [and is] also deployed against the city’s injustices and corruption.” This is music concrete. The main frame is shut down. You are snatched through the looking glass dystopia. Enjoy the future.
