Kati Biever happens upon the armed burglar who has just robbed the safe of the jewelry designer Marianne Dobrinth and tries in vain to stop him. She then gives a description of the perpetrator, not without pride. Killmer, on the other hand, finds such a maneuver, off duty, unarmed and without his companion, to be utterly reckless. Which he makes clear to her. So clear that Kati can only be reconciled by a heroic act on Killmer's part: after the statements of Marianne Dobrinth, her son Johannes and her young lover Tonio Berger have been recorded, he invites Kati to dinner. It is a lavish evening. At least that is what Killmer assumes when he wakes up the next morning in an Elvis costume in Kati's bed, not yet sober and with a complete blackout. Alone. Kati herself has disappeared along with his car. Little by little, Killmer and Ralf find out that she recognized the taxi driver Jochen Briegel as the burglar from the afternoon and gave chase. When Briegel is found shot, her concern grows. Finally they find Kati, injured but alive. However, because of a blow to the head, she too cannot remember what happened that night. The investigators manage to catch and arrest Briegel's partner while he was selling the stolen jewelry. His testimony increases the suspicion that a member of the Dobrinth family must have given the burglar the safe combination. Johannes suspects the young Tonio Berger. On the other hand, Johannes himself is also in possession of the combination and is desperate to get rid of Tonio. In the search for the murderer, Killmer and Kati now concentrate on the Dobrinths. Killmer's concentration remains divided. Because he absolutely wants to prevent Kati from finding out about the marriage they both entered into that night, spontaneously but legally.
