Phillip and Claire are both ambitious writers, one successful, the other struggling to be so. In celebration of the publication and widespread critical acclaim of Phillip's first book, the couple invites their friends to dinner. Over the course of the evening, the celebration devolves into bitter argument. Unsparing truth is leveled with cruel precision to see how much it can hurt the other. The merciless lens of the camera carefully focuses on the listener, more interested in the impact of what is being said than the act of saying it. Shot in extreme close-up, the film reveals a claustrophobic relationship that does not allow either Phillip or Claire room to breathe.
