Joe's sweetheart Jane and her father offer Antoine temporary shelter in their hut. Joe, continuing his search for survivors, finds and rescues Guilo. Before lapsing into a stupor, Guilo tells Joe that his mission across the sea was one of vengeance, its object: his sister's betrayer. Eventually Antoine plays his violin for Jane and succeeds to enchant her through his music. Realizing the power that is taking his girl from him, Joe goes to the city to learn to play the violin himself. During his absence, Antoine plans to make Jane his wife. But he is haunted by his past misdeeds, by the face of the girl whom he wronged. Antoine believes the girl's brother drowned. Joe returns from the city; as he enters his hut Guilo observes the instrument, which restores his memory. Later, Joe retires to a quiet spot on the beach to practice before telling Jane his secret. Jane, who has been grieving over Joe's unexplained absence, has gone to the sea for consolation. She meets Antoine, who draws her to him with his music. Guilo, on the rocks above, looks down and recognizes his enemy. As Antoine is about to kiss Jane, he hears the strains of music. Guilo pursues Antoine into the sea where the water closes over them. Joe comes out, explanations follow, and the two stand on the rocks looking out over the ocean, ignorant of the tragic end of Antoine and Guilo. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
