The proprietor promptly fires Eddie. He goes to the city and applies for the position. The great Hawkeye hires Eddie, after the necessary fee is paid, and he is sworn in and sent out to "detect." He gets an early scent when he sees a woman pass carrying a parcel, dripping blood. Eddie follows the woman to her home. The woman's husband, who happens to be a real policeman, promptly pinches Eddie and marches him off to Hawkeye's office. There Eddie learns that the drops of blood came from a harmless dead fowl and the mistake almost costs him his position. Once more Eddie, the sleuth, goes forth and comes upon some mysterious acting Dagoes giving each other the "high sign" and entering a basement dive. Eddie crawls in through a window, looks through the keyhole and sees the Dagoes in earnest and secret meeting. Aha, a clue! The Black Hand, by Heck! Eddie rushes back to the office, breathlessly tells his story, and the great Hawkeye, followed by his trusties, majestically leads them to the dive. They break in upon the meeting, arrest the surprised Dagoes and march them off to the office. Upon being confronted with their supposed crime, the astonished leader of the gang says, "We maka no plot. We Italians Union. We raise the price of the banan." The terrified Eddie is stripped of his star and allowed to go "back to the woods" after paying another heavy fine. Written by
