He takes the place of another prisoner, who is about to be exchanged, and returns to England. His fellow prisoner, George Scaddon, is a forger and because he dares not set foot on English soil, permits the other to take his place. Arriving at home, Bycliffe interviews Matthew Jermyn, manager of the Transome estate, and claims his right. Jermyn, seeing an opportunity to gain his own ends, denounces Bycliffe as the forger, Scaddon, and throws him into jail, where he dies. Mrs. Bycliffe, poor and alone, is found wandering in the forest by Rev. Rufus Lyon, who succors her, and after her death, adopts baby Esther. The girl grows to womanhood in ignorance of her parentage. Felix Holt, a young watchmaker who holds radical political opinions, falls in love with her. His condemnation of her favorite author, Byron, estranges them. Harold Transome. son of Mrs. Transome, present holder of the estate, stands for parliament and employs Jermyn as his agent for electioneering purposes. Felix Holt condemns Jermyn's methods, and accident serves him with an apt illustration of his own theories. A starving waif collapses on the threshold of the hall, and Holt cries to the populace: "This man Jermyn says he can save England, but turns a deaf ear to a starving waif." He takes the boy home with him, and by his tenderness, arouses Esther's love After a stormy meeting at the vicarage, where Jermyn has called and openly sneered at Holt's theories. Felix finds the agent's pocketbook, and not wishing to do the man a favor, asks the vicar to return the wallet to Jermyn. Mr. Lyons opens the pocketbook and finds in it a locket containing a picture of Esther's mother. In returning the pocketbook to Jermyn, he tells him of the dying woman he found in the forest and implores the man not to let Esther know that she is not his daughter. Jermyn, thus informed of Esther's rightful claim to the Transome estate, uses the knowledge for his own ends. Harold Transome has been defeated in the political campaign and has accused Jermyn of robbing the estate. Jermyn now holds Esther as a club over Harold s head. Harold and Mrs. Transome go straight to the vicarage, inform Esther that she is the Bycliffe heiress and take her home. She is wretched because Felix Holt has been arrested, at Jermyn's instance, for killing a bailiff in an electioneering riot. On the day of Holt's trial Esther goes to the courtroom and is overcome when her lover is acquitted. Jermyn, thwarted and furious, denounces Felix, whereupon Esther claims the attention of the crowd, and in a dramatic speech, renounces all claim to the Transome estate. Rising to a climax, she denounces Jermyn as the man responsible for riot and death. The crowd, convinced of Jermyn's perfidy pursue him and take summary vengeance after he begs Harold Transome's protection in vain. Esther and Felix Holt are happily married.
