His brutal indifference results in the baby's death. Alone with the terror, Mrs. Roberts goes insane. Her little girl witnesses everything, and never forgets. Fifteen years later, Roberts is a successful producer of plays; after his wife's death he has lost track of his daughter, who is brought up by her aunt. The girl's whole idea is to avenge her mother's wrongs. Histrionic talent, inherited from her father, helps her to get into Roberts' company, and she makes an instantaneous success. At the end of the season Roberts goes abroad, leaving the playwright and the star to arrange the next production. A remarkable play is written around the incidents of that night fifteen years ago.
