On one of her sleeping flights, she comes across Carlos with Sophia Novello, the daughter of a business associate Antonio Novello. Carlos was driving Sophia home after a party when their car got stuck in a mud-hole. Getting Sophia home late will look bad for known womanizer Carlos, especially since Sophia is engaged to Paco Lopez, the son of Antonio's best friend. But Carlos has Sister Bertrille as a witness - or so he thinks. When Antonio confronts Carlos about Sophia's extremely late arrival home, Carlos goes to get Sister Bertrille to vouch for him, which she refuses to do since she witnessed nothing. Carlos and Sister Bertrille sever their relationship over this, Carlos because she won't help him, and Sister Bertrille because he asked her to lie blatantly for him. Equally as worse for Carlos and the Novellos, Antonio ceases a business relationship which will ruin Carlos financially, and Paco calls off the engagement over the incident. The next evening, the Reverend Mother and Sister Jacqueline witness Sister Bertrille's sleep-flying. Carlos' request to Sister Bertrille now makes sense to the sisters. When Sister Bertrille goes to apologize and explain to Carlos, they still need to convince Antonio without making Sister Bertrille look like either a liar or a circus freak. Antonio does not believe her story and threatens to report her immoral behavior to the church. Sister Bertrille even tries to explain with a demonstration of a flight. The wind is not cooperating and she can't get airborne. Finally she appeals to Paco, for who she can fly. Paco believes everything and clears the air with the Novellos - which includes making up with Sophia - and in turn convinces Antonio to forgive Carlos. Lastly with the issue of Sister Bertrille's sleep-flying, a simple order from the Reverend Mother not to do it cures her of the problem. Written by Huggo See less
