Local diner owner Lucy Dexter has some secrets of her own that she would like to keep to herself and her deaf son, Eric. Dorothy Wheeler is in an unhappy marriage with her husband Martin and tries to shield this from their daughter Holly. Holly is seeing well off Teddy Welsh who's father, Nathan is a schoolteacher. Teddy wants things to progress with Holly. Unfortunately for Teddy, Holly just looks at him as a friend. Unknown to Holly and Teddy their parents Nathan and Dorothy have an eye for each other. At the Founders Day bash, Margaret and Guy are not happy with Ann slumming it with local bad boy John Grey. Margaret is worried that her granddaughter Ann is just settling. Guy on the other hand feels that his niece Ann is in the way of him getting the Millington fortune and puts it in his mother's head that Ann will end up like her mother Helen; (Guy's sister and Margaret's daughter) in a mental institution. Lisa Rogers the town flirt has her eyes on both Mark Hudson and Burt Carroll. Things heat up at the Founders Day when Mark and Burt get into a fist fight landing Burt into the hospital.
