Returning to his old home, he finds the house occupied by strangers. Inquiring from an old acquaintance as to the whereabouts of his only son, he is filled with joy to find that young Denham is now an important man in the neighboring county, to which he has moved. The father, filled with a happy expectancy, goes to his son, expecting a warm welcome, but is terribly wounded to find that his son wants nothing to do with him. "If it is known that my father is a jail bird," he is told, "my career will be ruined." Sorrowfully he leaves his son's office to make his living by odd jobs. As it happens, a desperate convict escapes from prison and Young Denham, as sheriff, is notified to be on the watch to capture him. While in the pursuit of the criminal, he comes across his father chopping wood, and orders him to leave the district, as his reputation demands it. A little later the son is attacked by the convict and escapes death only by the help of his father. When the rest of the posse come up and are about to arrest the father as an accomplice, the son publicly acknowledges his father and says that he owes his life to him. Written by
