The national protest, which lasted for at least two months beginning on March 1st, 1919, is now known as the March First Movement. The outcries of war prisoners chanting "Long Live Korean Independence. Hurrah!" soon influenced colonized civilians, resulting in a roaring chant and a wave of national flags around the streets. After returning from the capital, Yu Gwan-Sun, a young student, stirred her town to protest, leading to numerous deaths including those of her parents.
