This is particularly fortunate, for Lilly's father is addicted to good things and gout. He calls on Lilly and attends to Pa and stands well in with Bud, Lilly's small brother. One day he gets an invitation to a fancy dress ball and decides to go as Mephistopheles. He tries his suit on and he looks the devil to the life. The phone rings. It is an agitated call from Lilly. Bud has been practicing balancing stunts and has let the broom drop on Pa's gouty toe. Here is the chance for his new treatment, approved by the College of Physicians. All thought of fancy dress are forgotten, and seizing his device, off he goes with red cloak a-flying and moustaches bristling, a fiendish looking person. He passes the housekeeper on the steps, and after she has picked herself up she runs to the police station and tells them that the devil sure has come amongst them. Several members of the force start in pursuit, although they do not like the job. As Rice goes along he tests his apparatus and it flashes sparks. Each time he flashes it he frightens some woman or man out of his or her wits. Children get mixed and the housemaids and nurses faint, even the police prefer to attack him instead of seizing him. He arrives at the home of his future father-in-law; his girl's ma gives one look and bolts. Bud presses her hard in a race for safety. Pa is on a chair with one leg up, but this does not prevent his taking the window sash with him as he goes. Dr. Rice is astonished, the police catch him as he chases the father and it is hard to tell what might happen to him, when Lilly comes on, and taking off his head-dress, reveals him. Of course, Rice cures Pa of his gout and the rest is plain sailing. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
