The plot: Hilma, a young girl in 1880s Scania, longs for her mother's love. The mother is Victoria Benedictsson, a writer who longs to be away from family and home and who feels disgust for her biological daughter Hilma. Instead, she has attached herself to her stepdaughter Matti. Mother Victoria has a secret diary, in which she writes about Hilma: "I can not love her, I almost hate her." About Matti, she writes: "Illuminated by my warm love, this girl figure should appear ..." When Hilma secretly reads in the diary, she thinks that the loving words are about her. And her love for a mother who chooses not to have her child turns into a little triangle drama. See less
